Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami, (born Feb. 1, 1962, Tokyo, Japan), Japanese artist and entrepreneur widely recognized for his ability to adapt the aesthetics of Japanese traditional art to operate within the context of popular culture.Murakami studied Japanese painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1993. After completing his studies, he increasingly displayed his works in solo and group exhibitions, making his European debut in 1995 in ?TransCulture,? held at the 46th Venice Biennale. The following year Murakami?s paintings and sculptures were featured most notably at the second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Austl.

Christo & Jeanne-Claude

Christo was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, a small town in the Balkan Mountains. His given name was Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, and his parents were Ivan Vladimir Javacheff, a chemist and a businessman who ran a fabric factory, and Tzveta Dimitrova, a political activist and a secretary at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ivan and Tzveta were socially connected with artists and intellectuals around Gabrovo, and Christo grew up surrounded by progressive ideas and culture. Christo began creating art early on, inspired by his parents bohemian social circle, and was encouraged by several professors from the Academy of Fine Arts who would frequent the family home s to visit his parents. Politics also shaped his early life, and as a young boy Christo witnessed his birth country s invasion by the Nazis, and later by the Soviets.

Vik Muniz

Vik Muniz is an influential contemporary Brazilian artist best known for his complex photographic works. Sourcing a wide variety of eclectic and found materials?chocolate, jelly, toys, and trash?Muniz recreates iconic art historical works and scenes from popular culture. By displaying the final piece as a photograph, he explores memory, perception, and the nature of images as represented in arts and communication. Born Vicente Jos? de Oliveira Muniz December 20, 1961 in S?o Paulo, Brazil, the artist starred in the documentary film Waste Land (2010) tracking the course of his project Pictures of Garbage (2008). This series of large-scale images was created with the help of catadores?the people who scour Rio?s sizable trash dump for recyclable materials. Muniz was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for his social activism, and the artist has had his work exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, among others. He currently lives and works between Brooklyn, NY and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Antoni T?pies

Antoni T?pies (Spanish, 1923?2012) was a Catalan painter best known for his use of unusual materials to create paintings with a wall-like appearance. Born in Barcelona, he was encouraged at a young age to develop an interest in literature and the arts, and while studying law at Barcelona University, he started taking night classes in drawing at the Academia Valls. Two years later, in 1946 T?pies abandoned his studies to pursue an artistic career. With the exception of some drawing classes, T?pies was a self-taught artist, his early works mimicking the styles of Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.

Carsten Nicolai

carsten nicolai, born 1965 in karl-marx-stadt, is a german artist and musician based in berlin. he is part of an artist generation who works intensively in the transitional area between music, art and science. in his work he seeks to overcome the separation of the sensory perceptions of man by making scientific phenomenons like sound and light frequencies perceivable for both eyes and ears. influenced by scientific reference systems, nicolai often engages mathematic patterns such as grids and codes, as well as error, random and self-organizing structures. his installations have a minimalistic aesthetic that by its elegance and consistency is highly intriguing. after his participation in important international exhibitions like documenta x and the 49th and 50th venice biennale, nicolai?s works were shown worldwide in extensive solo and group exhibitions.
